Among one of the main reasons is to give people the chance to test out the software to determine whether it is good or not. If it is good, in exchange for a free software the software developer asks that the free user give them some feedback about why the product is good. If is bad the software developer wants to know why so that they will take the product back to the drawing board and attempt to correct and improve it for future users.
